Sulwyn Lok
Producer
Sulwyn Lok is a composer and music director whose music has been described as “magical” and filled with “plenty of beautiful sounds to savour” (The Straits Times). Based between New York and Singapore, his work blends orchestras, traditional Chinese instruments, voice, and synthesizers — rooted in cultural connection and narrative resonance.
His work has premiered at the Cannes and Busan film festivals, as well as the New York Asian Film Festival, and includes composing the opening for Hermès’ On the Wings of Hermès — an immersive experience that moved from Baroque elegance to whimsical marching band spectacle. He scored We Can Save the World!!!, an adventure comedy where he used Chinese instruments and voice for both tension and comic flair; Ana Is Here, a Serbian documentary on LGBTQ+ identity under a gay prime minister, broadcast on Serbia’s national TV; and Spring Love, which won Universal Music’s UCompose competition and featured across episodes of Tencent’s Breakfast in China. His accolades include Best Original Music at the National Youth Film Awards (Singapore) and a nomination for the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards in the musical theatre category.
In musical theatre, Sulwyn is the music director and arranger for Journey to Singapura (2025 SG, 2026 HK), the newest work in Liang Wern Fook’s trilogy of musicals, and has served as composer for a range of theatre productions for both children and adults. Beyond the stage, he has also received commissions from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and the arts councils of New York and Singapore.
Signature works include Here, Hear (exploring Asian New Yorker identity), Morning of the World (a meditation on renewal), and Waves, Towards the Lands We Call Home (a symphonic prayer shaped by early Chinese migration). His concerto cycle Into the Moonlit Yonder (for Chinese wind and percussion) explores longing, sanctuary, and transformation, while Breaking Free (for viola and zhongruan/guitar, with researcher-performer Andrew Filmer) reimagines instrumental sound worlds through scordatura and perspectives from Asian musical traditions.
Sulwyn is also deeply engaged in music’s social and educational dimensions. He was supported by the Singapore International Foundation to lead Project Artitude’s workshops for Afghan refugees in Indonesia, and he works closely with The Purple Symphony, Singapore’s largest inclusive orchestra. He has been invited as co-keynote speaker at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and UCSI University’s jointly organized Music Performance Research Symposium, where he spoke on culture and identity, and he regularly teaches film scoring workshops at YST Conservatory.
He is Associate Editor of theAnthology of Singaporean Ruan Compositions, and currently serves as music producer at The TENG Company, and resident composer for the Singapore Ruan Ensemble and Reverberance. Sulwyn holds a Master’s in Screen Scoring from New York University under the Singapore Digital Scholarship, and was valedictorian at YST Conservatory of Music, majoring in Recording Arts and Science.
