Golden Beats
Golden Beats: A Community Rhythm Wellness Programme is an arts-based initiative designed to support the holistic wellbeing of seniors in Active Ageing Centres (AACs). As individuals age, many face reduced mobility, social isolation, and emotional challenges alongside a diminished sense of independence. This programme responds to these needs through accessible, engaging musical experiences that go beyond physical health – supporting emotional resilience, cognitive stimulation, and meaningful social connection.
The programme harnesses the power of rhythm to activate multiple areas of the brain linked to movement, memory, and emotion. Through improvisational drumming and rhythmic activities, participants can engage without prior musical experience, making the sessions inclusive for varying abilities. These activities have been shown to support coordination, improve mood and alertness, and encourage self-expression in a low-pressure, enjoyable environment.
TENG is currently conducting research with Associate Professor Daniel Seah students from Singapore Management University (SMU), and occupational therapists from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) on the design and evaluation of the programme. The programme will be implemented throughout different AACs over the course of a year.
