The TENG Company (“TENG”) is pleased to announce Mapletree Investments’ (“Mapletree”) continued support of the Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship for the next two years. For the third year running, Mapletree and TENG are partnering to provide the only Chinese instrumental music scholarship in Singapore for youths from low-income families.

This year’s Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship comes on the back of two successful years of the scholarship programme. There are five scholarships on offer, an increase from 2019’s initial four. Each scholarship is tenable for two years.

Mapletree’s Chairman, Mr Edmund Cheng, explains: “Following the positive response and outstanding performance of the scholars in 2018 and 2019, Mapletree is pleased to increase the number of scholarship placements this year, and provide more young musicians with access to Chinese music education. In continuously growing our partnership with TENG, we look forward to embarking on more meaningful initiatives to support the next generation of traditional Chinese music practitioners, and making their music accessible for audiences in Singapore.”

TENG’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, Mr Yang Ji Wei, echoed: “We are ecstatic at the success of the scholarship and the progress that our scholars have made thus far. TENG believes strongly that music is for all and no one should be deprived of the opportunity to learn music. Mapletree’s increased support in 2020 will allow TENG to empower young Chinese musicians and in turn, develop a healthy Chinese music ecosystem in Singapore.”

Delivered by TENG’s educational arm, The TENG Academy, the scholarship provides a holistic programme that develops young talents age 21 and below who demonstrate a passion for Chinese music through robust one-to-one training classes, mentorships and performance opportunities.

Mapletree’s partnership with TENG plays an integral role in making Chinese music education accessible for all. Since its founding in 2018, the recipients of the scholarship have exceeded expectations, achieving distinctions for both their ABRSM Examinations and Chinese Music Grading Examinations. Scholars also had the opportunity to perform in The TENG Ensemble’s recent outreach programmes and community concerts, such as TENG’s regular performances at VivoCity. With the help of the scholarship, two scholars have also successfully applied for their chosen schools through the Direct School Admissions (DSA).

“I was recently accepted into Singapore Polytechnic’s Diploma in Music and Audio Technology course via DSA and will be joining them in April 2020. I would never be able to get into this course if not for the strong support I have received from Mapletree, TENG and my instructors.” says scholarship recipient, Kee Teng Hwee, 17.

Applications for the Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship opens on 6 January 2020 and will close on 21 February 2020. Prospective candidates will be shortlisted for an audition and interview by 11 March 2020.
