Examination Stucture
The examination includes seventeen instruments – Guzheng, Erhu, Dizi, Pipa, Yangqin, Ruan, Liuqin, Gaoyin Sheng, Zhongyin Sheng, Gaoyin Suona, Zhongyin Suona, Hulusi, Guanzi, Cello, Double Bass, Percussion and Guqin.
*Effective from the Year-End examinations (November - December 2025)
Basic to Advanced Levels
BASIC LEVEL (GRADE 1 TO 3)
• One etude set piece
• One solo music piece, to be selected from a list of four
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (GRADE 4 TO 6)
• One etude set piece
• One solo music piece, to be selected from a list of four
ADVANCED LEVEL (GRADE 7 TO 8)
• One etude set piece
• One solo music piece, to be selected from a list of four
The music pieces are listed in the Examinations music scores. Candidates are to purchase the Examinations Scores to register for the Examinations.
*For Percussion Grade 5 to Grade 8: The Cymbals component is removed from the Percussion syllabus. Candidates will not be able to select Cymbals as the choice piece.
Examination for Certificate In Professional Performance
The Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance will be graded by two examiners. The Chief Examiner will preside the Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance.
Requirements
The minimum requirement for the Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance is a Pass in Grade 8 Examination.
DOCUMENTS FOR VERIFICATION
Applicants are required to:
Attach a copy of the Grade 8 Examination qualification certified by any exam board.
The above has to be submitted together with the registration form to TENG before the closing date for registration.
Prospects
Certificate holders may apply for teaching positions relating to instrumental performances, or to pursue higher learning in music conservatories or institutions locally or abroad.
Repertoires & scores
Two music pieces
Examination scores will not be provided. Students are to use their own book and exam scores with the reference to the version and composer stated, or song pieces of the equivalent level by overseas examination boards.

It is not required to include piano accompaniment for the Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance.
Candidates are required to submit the music scores of the 2 pieces to be performed by a given deadline, otherwise they will be disqualified from the Examinations.
For Percussion examination (Certificate In Professional Performance) only: The Examination scores for Percussion is available for purchase from our retailers. Candidates are required to select and perform on two different instruments.
Assessment Criteria
The Assessment Criteria below illustrates the basis of marking for our examinations (Face-to-face and Digital). It serves as a guideline for our examiners to assess candidates fairly and accurately. Candidates can refer to the guide as a tool for self-evaluation as they prepare for the Examinations.
Candidates’ technical competence and musical understanding are assessed through two performances.
Grades 1 to 8: Candidates are required to perform one etude set piece, and one solo music piece (to be selected from a list of four); The etude set piece is marked out of 30 and the solo music pieces is marked out of 70 to give a total of 100 marks.
Certificate in Professional Performance: Candidates are required to perform two music pieces. Each piece is marked out of 50 to give a total of 100 marks.
