TENG launches new album, Music for Mindfulness, with original instrumental tunes produced with Binaural Beats to help alleviate stress and anxiety

The album marks TENG’s foray into music for wellness, backed by research conducted in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology and created in consultation with licensed music therapists

Singapore, 1 February 2022  – Singapore-born arts company, TENG, today announced the launch of its latest album, Music for Mindfulness, which aims to promote wellness and lower stress and anxiety for listeners. Backed by research on the impact of Binaural Beats (BB) as a form of sound wave therapy as well as the ancient Chinese philosophies of music therapy, the tracks are created with a dynamic progression of BB from theta to delta waves while embodying TENG’s signature East-West sound through an arrangement of the Dizi (flute), Guzheng, Pipa, Erhu, keyboard and acoustic guitar. This is the first time Chinese instrumental music has incorporated Binaural Beats to create a convenient, contemporary and easy listening experience.

The album marks TENG’s foray into music for wellness, following its ongoing TENG Gives Back programme, where award-winning instrumentalists perform at homes, dialysis centres, hospitals and hospices across Singapore to bring comfort to beneficiaries through music. The album comprises 10 instrumental tracks produced by Chia Kun Loong, Joyce Gim and Leonard Goh; in consultation with Registered Music Therapist and Founder of Prospect Music Therapy, Evelyn Lee, and stemmed from research conducted with the Singapore Institute of Technology’s Health and Sciences Department as well as its Associate Professor Dr. Peter Tay in 2020. The study revealed positive correlations between lower state-anxiety levels after listening to instrumental music with BB, compared to those who listened to an audiobook or just instrumental music.

“Our venture into music for wellness arose during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic where there were higher levels of anxiety experienced by people, as well as an increasing youth mental health crisis around the world. We are keen to bring research-proven anxiety-reducing musical experiences to one’s homes as part of our work in reimagining music and its possibilities to not only entertain, but to empower and benefit the community. This includes helping people unwind and find rest, anywhere and anytime they need it. Since then, we have tried and tested different arrangements to best fuse the technology of Binaural Beats with our signature Chinese instrumental sounds to create Music for Mindfulness,” said Dr Samuel Wong, Co-Founder and Creative Director of The TENG Company.

Sharing their perspectives on the album, Evelyn Lee shared, “TENG adds on to the emerging trend of Asian relevant material, which music therapists can use. Backed up by research and science, this album has an added advantage of being accessible to audiences; it can be freely used as part of a daily relaxation routine, without the need for professional training or supervision.”

Associate Professor Dr. Peter Tay added, “This form of music therapy can be incorporated as an adjunctive therapy for people who experience anxiety or other mood issues associated with their health conditions.”

Drawing inspiration from the healing power of nature, the album cover is designed with elements of fresh air, sand dunes, and greenery to create a serene look and feel. To facilitate an optimal listening experience, the album is sequence locked for the full album where listeners will listen to all ten tracks in its fixed order from theta to delta waves, lasting a total duration of over one hour. Listeners are encouraged to listen with earphones or headphones, and advised to not drive or operate machinery when listening to the album.

“We hope the unique music experience will calm one’s mind and put their body in a  tranquil state. This foray into music for wellness marks a new milestone for TENG and we will continue to innovate with music and break new grounds as we impact, inspire and empower the community through music”, Dr Wong continued.

Music for Mindfulness is available exclusively on iTunes at $14.80, with individual tracks available at $1.48 each.
