Nurturing The Future of Traditional Chinese Music in Singapore With The Mapletree-TENG Scholarship

Singapore, 19 December 2023 – The TENG Company (“TENG”) is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for the Mapletree-TENG Scholarship aimed at supporting and empowering aspiring Singaporean Chinese Musicians. For the seventh consecutive year, Mapletree Investments’ (“Mapletree”) continued support will help young talents from less-privileged backgrounds pursue their passions for Chinese music. Applications are open until 28 February 2024.

The Mapletree-TENG Scholarship aims to nurture young Chinese musicians in Singapore by providing robust one-to-one lessons, mentorships, and performance opportunities to scholarship recipients. The journey of music education is often costly and may be hindered by a student’s financial circumstance. This scholarship programme plays an integral role in making Chinese music education accessible for these individuals. There are five placements being offered this year. The scholarship will be funded at $11,000 each and is tenable for two years.

To date, 26 recipients have benefitted from the Mapletree-TENG Scholarship. Past scholars have gone on to attain awards at prestigious competitions including the Singapore Chinese Music Competition. Ee Anzhi, who was awarded the scholarship twice — once in 2020 and again in 2022 — won First Prize in the Dizi Solo Section Junior Category at the 2022 edition of the Singapore Chinese Music Competition. Ryan Lim, also a two-time recipient of the scholarship, won First Prize in the Erhu Solo Section Senior Category in the same year.

“The Mapletree-TENG scholarship is a good example of the positive impact of long-term support. In order to provide a reliable platform for younger scholars who are passionate about pursuing Chinese music, as well as award new deserving recipients, Mapletree is pleased to expand our commitment by adding at least one extra scholarship place in 2024. Aligned to our corporate social responsibility framework, we look forward to supporting the scholars in their journey ahead. " said Mr Edmund Cheng, Mapletree Chairman.

“The potential of our future lies within the young minds we support. Witnessing the remarkable talent displayed by each scholar at such a tender age is truly inspiring. We eagerly anticipate their contributions to our society. TENG is immensely grateful to Mapletree for their steadfast commitment to this scholarship, fostering a partnership that empowers these talented individuals.” said Mr Yang Ji Wei, Executive Director of TENG.

“The Mapletree-TENG scholarship has given a wide range of opportunities to hone my musical skills - ranging from theory lessons to performance opportunities. Not only has it provided me with the opportunity to further pursue my music journey, it has also allowed me to make a few good friends along the way. I am proud to be one of the scholars!” said Juliette Goh, recipient of the 2023 Mapletree-TENG scholarship.

Besides covering music lesson fees, the scholarship also funds course material and examination fees. Applications for the scholarship will close on 28 February 2024. Prospective candidates will be notified of their interview and audition date by 18 March 2024.
