Cultivating the Future Generation of Chinese Musicians in Singapore with the Mapletree - TENG Academy Scholarship

Singapore, 29 January 2021 – The Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship that has helped young talents from less-privileged backgrounds fulfil their dreams of pursuing their passion for Chinese music is now open for applications until 28 February 2021. This two-year scholarship, initiated by Mapletree Investments (“Mapletree”) and The TENG Company (“TENG”) in 2018, funds and provides passionate youths with a holistic programme to learn and develop in Chinese instrumental music.

Delivered through TENG’s education arm, The TENG Academy, robust one to one classes, mentorships and performance opportunities are provided to ensure a well-rounded and effective curriculum. The journey of music education can be costly and may often be hindered by a student’s financial circumstance. This scholarship programme seeks to make it more accessible for these individuals. There are four placements being offered this year.

“As along-standing patron of the arts, Mapletree is glad to support the Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship for the fourth consecutive year. The scholarship has continued to provide an enriching platform for youth passionate in Chinese instrumental music to further their musical journey. We look forward to welcoming the new batch of scholars and celebrating their progress together,” said Mr Edmund Cheng, Mapletree’s Chairman.“

In TENG, we believe that music is for everyone and nobody should be deprived of the opportunity to learn an instrument. Through the scholarship, we hope that we can nurture the future generation of Chinese musicians in Singapore and that they can in return contribute to the very same ecosystem that we all belong to,” said Mr Yang Jiwei, Executive Director of TENG.

“This scholarship has helped to refine my skills, express myself more articulately through music and inculcated self-discipline. The goal of doing one’s best to live up to the score’s name drives me to constantly improve and be more self-aware when approaching the piece,” said Seetoh Yoke Cheong, one of the current Mapletree-TENG Academy scholars.

Besides covering instrumental lesson fees, the scholarship also funds course material and examination fees. Once applications close on 28 February 2021, potential candidates will be notified of their interview and audition date by 10 March 2021.

To date, 14 recipients benefitted from the Mapletree-TENG Academy Scholarship.
