Chew Lixian is a versatile musician, proficient in both Chinese and Western music. She began her music studies at the age of eight, learning the piano under renowned local pianists, Chew Kuan Ni, Yap Chiu Yuen and Low Shao Suan. Lixian later received the Ministry of Education Teaching (Overseas) Scholarship to pursue a music degree at the University of Manchester. She studied under the tutelage of English classical pianist Andrew Wilde.

Lixian’s first taste of Chinese music came when she watched her brother perform in his school’s Chinese Orchestra and subsequently Singapore Chinese Orchestra concerts as part of her family weekend outings. Without hesitation, Lixian joined the Chinese Orchestra in her Secondary school and started learning the Sheng. Since then, Lixian has performed extensively in ensembles and orchestras in Singapore and overseas, having given solo and ensemble performances in places including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. She was also appointed the Sheng Principal player of the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) in her years in the orchestra. She made her concerto debut with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra after she clinched 1st Prize in the Sheng Open Category of the National Chinese Music Competition in 2016. In 2018, she performed a solo “Rhapsody of Tianshan” with the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra in Hong Kong as well as in Singapore. She is currently learning under Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) musician Cheng Ho Kwan Kevin.

Always seeking opportunities for collaboration through music, Lixian formed a quintet and participated in the Singapore Chinese Music Competition Ensemble Category and achieved a 2nd Prize in 2020.

In 2024, she was elected to be a committee member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation Youth Chapter for her involvement in the Chinese music scene. Lixian is now a sheng musician of the TENG Ensemble. As a performer and an educator, Chew hopes to spread her love for music to the wider community.
